The Movie Set...Along the Rio Grande River on FM 170 west of the town of Lajitas. The made for TV movies, "Streets of Laredo" and "Dead man's Walk" were partly filmed here.

Hiking Trails...Big Bend National Park offers over 100 miles of hiking trails. A permit is required for all overnight trips, and can be obtained in person only up to 24 hours in advance of the trip. Pets are not allowed along the trails or in the back country. It is better to leave your pets at home if planning on hiking. The Chisos Mountain area is "Bear and Mountain Lion Country", so check with ranger before starting on a hike. Big Bend National Park

The Window and the Chisos Basin...are the most popular attractions in Big Bend National Park and are the highest point in the park. While in the Basin, look through the Window at the desert far below.

Santa Elena Canyon...on the Rio Grande River inside Big Bend National Park is another of the area's popular attractions. Walls in the canyon rise over 1,500 feet above the river and easy access to the canyon is available from the parking lot. Mexico can be seen after a short climb up stairs on the canyon wall.

The Ghost Town...Once a thriving mining town with a population of 2,000 people. The people abandoned the town because the cinnabar mines closed, which provided the only jobs in the area. Now ghost-like buildings silhouette the landscape. Terlingua is located outside the west entrance of Big Bend National Park.

Rafting...The Rio Grande follows the southern boundary of Big Bend National Park for 118 miles. In this distance the river has carved three canyons, Santa Elena, marical and Boquillas, which have rapids varying in difficulty from Class I to Class IV. Between the canyons, the river is generally slower paced. Personal equipment can be used for river trips, but a permit must be obtained from a park visitor center. Chili Cook-off...Each year thousands of Chili-Heads make their trek to Terlingua for the "Original Terlingua International Championship Chili Cook-off" and the "Chili Appreciation Society International Cook-off". Both cook-offs are held during the first Saturday of November. Plan to arrive a couple of days early because there's always something special going on.

2000 Chihuahuan Desert Challenge...is a four day mountain bike race and festival, held each February at Lajitas, Texas. Its Cross Country Race Course in listed as one of the top 25 in the world by Velo News. To obtain more information please email info@desertsportstx.com.

Bird Watching...More than 450 bird species have been identified, including the raucous Mexican Jay, beautiful humming birds and the rare Colima Warbler that nest only in the Big Bend National Park in the Chisos Mountains.
