Cross Plains Texas..."Home of Conan The Barbarian" and home to 1,100 friendly West Texans, is located at the intersection of Hwy. 36, 206 & 279 and was the of Robert E. Howard, author of Conan the Barbarian, from 1919 until his death in 1936. The Robert E. Howard House Museum has been restored and features several pieces of the original furniture and the Cross Plains Library has some of Howard's first editions and original manuscripts. An annual community event, the Christmas Village is held the first weekend in December and features local bands, choirs, a Tour of Homes and live displays in shop windows.
Lake Brownwood...is 18 miles south and Lake Brownwood State Park is 5 miles farther. Lakewood Recreation Center...with a 9-hole golf course is 5 miles east and an 18-hole golf course is available 12 miles east of town.
