The Rio Grande follows the southern boundary of Big Bend National Park for 118 miles. In this distance the river has carved three canyons, Santa Elena, marical and Boquillas, which have rapids varying in difficulty from Class I to Class IV. Between the canyons, the river is generally slower paced. Personal equipment can be used for river trips, but a permit must be obtained from a park visitor center.
